CONTINUED: 5. Find a professional dance instructor with DanceSport
competition training and experience who can train you based on strict
syllabus routines. Ask for proof of their own competition accomplishments and
adhere strictly to learning syllabus figures and proper technique. Also,
choose an instructor who you communicate with well so you absorb the concepts
more easily. 6. A DanceSport athlete must seek financial support to
buy professional dance lessons and for travel expenses to competitions.
Eventually as a dance athlete reaches the Gold level and learns both the
man’s and ladies part, they can begin to teach other dancers as an amateur to
earn additional money. USA Dance is a member of the
International DanceSport Federation (IDSF) and is also recognized by the
United States Olympic Committee as the National Governing Body for
DanceSport. United States National titles and the opportunity to represent
the United States at the IDSF World Championships are awarded at the annual

Competition Calendar— plan your next competition. In order to
attend Nationals, a couple must have danced in a regional National Qualifying
Event. Attending the Nationals is costly to travel and the entry fees are
higher, so a couple must determine their potential placement by their
previous track record of high placements in local and regional competitions,
in order to choose where to best allocate funds. As a dance couple reaches
the pre-Champ and Champion level and have a track record of placing high in
most events, attending Nationals will be more rewarding.
